NAVASOTA - Mike Lowell writes: I remember seeing these guys at many a Sunken Gardens show and other events around the state. A very powerful and tight outfit that I am guessing came out of the Houston area. A 5 piece (2guitars, bass & drums, standup singer) , fronted by this big hairy lead singer who would gyrate around the stage like a wild man. Kind of a cross of caveman meets Texas rock. These guys always did a great set but I never knew if I should be afraid or entertained. A very powerful act. Don't know much more about them or what became of them since the early 70's. I hear that some of the members have reformed a new outfit called Navasota-Rio. Should be worth checking out if they come to a venue near you soon.

You saw these guys at all the big events around Texas in the early 70's I hear there is a reformed outfit called Navasota-Rio soon to hit the road. Also, I seem to recall that one of the guitar players broke away and toured for years in the clubs calling themselves "The Steve Long Group".

(Contributed by Pete Williams) PW writes: "I had been straining my brain trying to remember where my friends and i used to see Navasota in San Antonio. By browsing through your site, I found the club name Papa Jacks, and sure enough, that's the place. We would come in from New Braunfels. I saw Navasota there several times. My friend worked for a photographer who had a deal at Papa Jacks where he took pictures of the bands. Because of this connection, I spent a lot of time hanging out in the band room. I remember watching the Navasota guys tuning up and getting ready for the gig. One night, back in that room, the manager was planning a "streaking event" to surprise the customers. So, all of a sudden, in the band room, there was a long line of random, completely naked people, getting ready to run through the club. Crazy times back then."
